Valley of the Golden Mummies | Museum of the Golden Mummies

The Valley of the Golden Mummies is that of the largest cemetery in Egypt dating back to Greco-Roman times. It revealed around 250 mummies and most of them are aristocracies who lived within the Bahariya Oasis during Greco-Roman times.

The Valley of the Golden Mummies is located in the Bahariya oasis and regularly visited during Egypt tours, about 420 km from Cairo. This burial Catacomb with thousands of gold mummies was used throughout the Greco-Roman period in Egypt. The finds tell us that it was intended for characters from the middle and upper classes of society. It was discovered accidentally when a donkey carriage was stuck within the hole resulting in such an enormous underground burial complex. Thus far four graves are excavated and 105 golden mummies were well-preserved by the sand, Many of those mummies are covered by gold masks, which have given the name to the valley. Being decorated with religious motifs, the mummies have allowed researchers to find out better about this era, until the instant of their discovery, there have been not too many details. Today, archaeologists continue with the exploration work of the valley and through different exploration, methods have concluded that there could also be quite 10,000 mummies underground buried by the Romans.
