The High Dam in Aswan is the most important project in modern Egypt to save the country from the destructive floods and the sever droughts and to generate power, when the construction of the dam began in 1960s , it was the most essential part of President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s effort to develop the country for all Egyptians. While the dam is certainly not the largest in the world, it is an impressive engineering marvel nonetheless, over 360 feet in hight and 12,500 feet is the width.
The High dam was started in 1960 and completed in 1971 forming a huge reservoir called Lake Nasser comprising above one hundred and fifty-seven cubic meters of water beyond, named after the former Egyptian President Nasser, was filled in 1979. sometimes tourists like to go see the dam during theirEgypt Travel Packages, Egypt Day Tours and Aswan day tours.
The plan was made by German companies and was carried out by Russian companies.
The Aswan High Dam generates average electricity that can meet more than half of the country’s needs, as well as giving the opportunity to develop a distribution of electricity at low cost even in the most remote regions. The hydroelectric plant is currently the most powerful in Africa, although it may no longer be so in a few years; in Ethiopia, a dam known as the “Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam” is under construction on the Blue Nile. Its construction marked the appearance of Lake Nasser, an artificial lake in which 500 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide, for a total of 6,000 square kilometers of water, making it the largest artificial lake ever built by mankind. The flooded area caused the movement of over 90,000 inhabitants of Nubia and 24 monuments, the most important of which are those of Abu Simbel temples that were built by the legendary King Ramses II of the 19th dynasty for himself and his wife Queen Nefertari, and Philae Temple which is dedicated for the worship of Goddess Isis and has been moved to the Island of Agilika. Besides the dam itself, another tourist attraction is the Kalabsha Temple, located on the western bank of Lake Nasser. The temple was to be moved here before the flooding of the lake basin. The temple, dating back to the Ptolemaic era, was dedicated to the worship of Mandulis, a god of ancient Nubia. The high dam is heavily guarded since it would wash most of Egypt into the Mediterranean if it collapsed.
