The history of Cairo International Airport begins in the 1940s when the US Air Force base at Pine Field was established five kilometers from Almaza Airport to serve the coalition during World War II. American forces left the base at the end of the war.
In 1945, the Civil Aviation Authority acquired the base and allocated it to international civil aviation. The airport was called "King Farouk I Airport". Meanwhile, Almaza Airport has been designated for domestic flights.
