Tel El Amarna

Tel el-Amarna is an ancient city located on the eastern bank of the Nile in Minya Governorate in Upper Egypt. It is considered a symbol of “revolutionary beliefs” and “fictional hymns.” Historians and Egyptologists also called it the titles of “the mysterious city of religious secrets” and “oriental talisman.” And its name was “Sister of Aten” (meaning: “Horizon Aten”) is the new capital established by King Akhenaten, and it is located forty-five kilometers south of Bani Hassan. Remains of the ancient capital are still present.

Some believe that Akhenaten chose this region specifically, because of its unique location, which made it somewhat isolated, as the mountain ranges that surround it from the three northern, eastern and southern sides, and the Nile River that extends along its western side isolated it from the world, to be able to practice its worship without being disturbed or disturbed by The priests of Amun or their suppliers, and he needed the support of the army to move from Thebes to Amarna, due to the name of that capital, Tel Amarna, to the tribe of Bani Imran, which they migrated to and settled in the sixth century AH.

The city of Tel El-Amarna includes two royal palaces (the northern palace and the southern palace), temples of Aten, Noble houses and a village for craftsmen, and the Queen’s Cemetery, which is located in the northeast of the city, in addition to 25 of the tombs of senior state officials, divided into two groups (northern, southern), and a drawing Akhenaten borders the city with 14 panels known as “border boards”, and the letters of Tell el-Amarna were found in the ancient city.

Surrounding the city is a huge wall, which is the largest source of information about it, as information has been inscribed on it describing the founding of the city, and in the heart of the eastern slopes, the royal Akhenaten cemetery is hidden from which only one cemetery was built, and it appears that it was built in haste to carry his body, even if it was used only twice , Where the body of one of his wives, whose name has not been mentioned, carried the body of his daughter “Mechattan”, while the tombs of the nobles were built on the northern and southern slopes of the Royal Valley.

Now, there are just scattered remains of the ancient city that were built at Tell el-Amarna, but the myth of Akhenaten and his wife, Nefertiti, are still appearing on the horizon. If you are in Minya, it may be deserving a visit to Tel ُEl-Amarna to view the remains of the “heretic” pharaoh’s legacy.
