The historic popular Fishawi Café is one of the famous cafes in Cairo and is located in the Al-Azhar neighborhood and it is one of the oldest cafes in Cairo, dating back to the year 1797. The cafe was famous and fascinating, thanks to the Egyptian international writer Naguib Mahfouz, who was «Fishawi» is his favorite, As the cafe contemplated many of the first drafts of his novels, it was a place to meet his friends, fans, artists and simple people.
The historic Al-Fishawi Café is located in one of the narrow alleys adjacent to the Imam Hussain Mosque in the Al-Azhar neighborhood, in the heart of Fatimid Cairo, in the Khan Al-Khalili area. It is frequented by a mixture of Egyptians, Arab tourists and foreigners of all nationalities who dazzle the atmosphere of the pure oriental café, with its crowded wooden tables, and benches like loaded Arabic sofas, mirrors hanging on its sides and decorated with wood and frames.
Although Khan Al-Khalili became full of countless cafes of various levels, some overlooking the Imam Hussain Mosque and others overlooking the main streets, none of them competed with al-Fishawi in his fame. Some other cafes are empty on their thrones, and their workers invite customers to sit in different ways, while you may not find an empty chair in Al-Feshawi and you may have to wait for some time without any table. El-Fishawy Café started with a small buffet prepared by Haj Fahmy Ali El-Fishawy in the year 1797 in the heart of Khan El-Khalili, where the Egyptians and tourists of Khan El-Khalili sat, and were able to buy stores next to him.
The first room in the cafe is the “Basfor” room, lined with ebony wood. It is full of antiques and an Arab cup of leather, silver, crystal and Chinese. It was dedicated to King Farouk, the last king of the family of Muhammad Ali.
The second room is called “Masterpiece”, and it is named after it. It is decorated with mother of pearl, wood, marble, ivory, arabesque and green knife, especially for artists.
The most popular room was the “rhyme” room. Popular neighborhoods compete in the first half of the twentieth century every Thursday of Ramadan in a rhyme, through a person who represents his characteristics of lightness, speed of intelligence and tactfulness of tongue. And continue the verbal argument to silence each other.
